The
Kobbeh mausoleum.
This
is the resting place of the Emirs Ahmed Maan (1697), Haïdar Chehab (1732) and
his son Mansour (1770). Also known as the Cypress cemetery it is situated in the
Sherbine quarter northwest of the town which is bordered by a small wood of
cypress trees. This
Mausoleum is a massive cube-shaped construction measuring 6 x 6 x 5 meters, and
topped by a dome typical of the Maan era design. According to the historian J. Nehmeh (Pages of Lebanon, DeirElQamar), Sitt Nassab, mother of Fakhreddine II Maan, who died in DeirElQamar in her son’s palace in 1633, also lies in this mausoleum. However
this cannot be proved since the entrance is blocked because of excavation works
carried out at a later period. From one of the windows of the mausoleum, you will notice two tombs of white and gray marble measuring about 1.5 meters in height and of Islamic design. This mausoleum was also known as the “hangman’s dome” because it is believed that the Emir Youssef Chehab used to have murderers and escaped prisoners hanged here. Ironically there is a beautiful view from here onto the town square and the red tiled roofs of the surrounding houses.
