The Kharj which is adjacent to the Kaïssariyyeh is a large warehouse and was also built by Fakhreddine II in 1616. It later served as barracks for the soldiers of the Chehab dynasty. It was from here that the Emir Bechir Chehab III used to distribute flour to his soldiers and subjects which earned him the nickname of “Abu Tahin” or “father of the flour”! The Kharj, with its walls two meters thick and thirteen meters high, its great arched vaults and small open courtyard has also become in part a section of the French Cultural Center.
