The Synagogue dates back to the Maan dynasty. Built in the 17th Century it was finally sold in 1900 to Mansour Kobeh and Daoud Raad Chamoun. The deed of sale, which
was ratified by Beirut's Grand Rabbi, still exists in the archives of the
Municipal Council. Restored
in a somewhat unorthodox manner with the addition of a stylized mandaloun
unusual to see on a religious edifice, it now belongs to the General Directorate
of Antiquities. Above
the Synagogue to the left, is a large building once one of the first Catholic
schools in the area run by the sisters of the Jesuit Lazarist order.
