The
Palace of the Emir Younes Maan -
Fakhreddine II's brother. In
this palace lived the Emir Younes who was in charge of the town in 1613 during
the exile in Italy of his brother Fakhreddine II. The
Ottomans burnt it down two years later, as were all the Maan palaces in DeirElQamar.
Originally this palace was on three floors but the two top floors were torn down
by the Emir Youssef Chehab who used the stones to build his own palace, which
today houses the Municipal Council. The
most remarkable aspect of this palace is the richness of the main portico
decorated with pink colored stone carved in ripples, which contrasts sharply
with the severe facade of this massive construction. The artist very cleverly
used polychrome art, magnifying through his use of color the main arch of this
portico together with intricate sculptures and designs as is usual in Lebanese
architecture. Behind the main entrance lies a large deep arcade standing on
massive pillars. Today this palace is the private home of the family of Mr. Fouad Tehini, former Mayor of DeirElQamar and M.P. for the Shouf district, who passed away in 1990.
