The Dany Chamoun Square, formerly known as the “Midane” (meaning the jousting area). In the days of the Emirs, the square was on the same level as the access roads.
The circular drinking fountain which receives its water from the “Shalout” source, was built in the 19th century during the Moutassarrifat period, i.e. the Ottoman period.
On the north, facing side of the square, there are three commemorative plaques: The center plaque dating from 1972 commemorates the restoration work done to the square and inaugurated by President Suleiman Frangie.
To the right, is the plaque renaming the square in memory of Dany Chamoun, a native of DeirElQamar, and prominent Lebanese political leader who was savagely assassinated in 1990 together with his wife Ingrid and his two sons Tarek and Julian.
The plaque on the left dates from 1991 and bears witness and thanks to M. Walid Joumblatt then Minister of Public Works, who at the time, helped bring the square to its present standing and condition.
